Beijing has also beefed up security at Tiananmen Square and barred foreign journalists from the area. The crackdown is aimed at preventing fresh demonstrations to mark the anniversary. Hundreds or even thousands of people were killed when the country's communist leadership sent in the military to clear out protestors and democracy activists.
