German Development Media Awards
The 2012 award winners together with the Parliamentary State Secretary Gudrun Kopp and Development Minister Dirk Niebel. From 2013 onwards, the awards are also open to journalists from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
Print Award Winner
Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper correspondent Arne Perras won with his article "A Matter of Life and Death". It explores the problems of Africa's health care systems and shows how complications prior to and during the birthing process can be fatal for African women.
Television Award Winner
Documentary film maker Susanne Jäger won with her report "The Jungle Radio" for the German broadcaster, WDR. The documentary follows the work of a Nicaraguan woman who founded a radio station in the jungle to give to give a voice to rape survivors and other abused women.
Radio Award Winner
Bettina Rühl won best radio feature for her report "The Power of the Warlords of Mogadishu" for the German broadcaster, WDR. The report examines the political turmoil in Somalia, where warlords have been ruling for more than 20 years.
Online Award Winner
Marion Dilg won for her interactive multimedia project "Hunger", published by German broadcaster, SWR. In the online feature, an interactive map of the world linked elements such as videos, photo galleries and interviews focusing on global hunger, its causes and possible solutions.
