Berlin Fashion Week
July 7, 2015"Iconic" is a word often coupled with Berlin - especially when it comes to the city's notorious hedonistic pursuits, its cultural scene and its pivotal point in global history.
However, with its still-affordable rents and deep pool of creative talent, the city continues to redefine itself as an iconic global fashion powerhouse, seeking to compete with style big-shots like Paris, London, New York and Milan.
Though the very biggest labels don't add Berlin to their fashion show calendars, a number of major players will all be strutting their wares over the coming days at Berlin Fashion Week, with the Brandenburg Gate as usual the focus. Day one kicks off on Tuesday with shows from renowned labels like Sopopular, Lena Hoschek, Pearly Wong, Marc Cain and Riani.
Around 3,000 labels are exhibiting at Berlin Fashion Week, which incorporates 200 events, showcases and exhibitions throughout the German capital.
Making the most of Berlin's reputation as unconventional and creative, the fair focuses on local designers, green and ethical fashion, sustainability, and plus-size designs. The program - which runs through July 11 - also features unique designs by Germany's African Diaspora and the award for Wearable IT/Fashion Tech, highlighting the city's IT hub.
Around 200,000 thousand buyers, trade-delegates, media representatives and fashion lovers are expected to descend on the city to catch the latest in Berlin-centric trends. The event takes place twice per year, in January and in July.
