Best bits:

- Augsburg have never started a Bundesliga season better than this one (seven points from four games).

- Cologne have made the second worst start to a Bundesliga season ever. In 1963/64, Karlsruhe also lost their first four games but had a worse goal difference (-13) than Cologne (-11).

- VAR had another curious weekend. Christian Gentner took a blow to the head from an out-rushing Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels. Gentner was taken to hospital with a severe concussion, but referee Guido Winkmann deemed it a collision. Winkmann did consult with the video referee but they agreed with the decision. While Casteels clearly didn't mean to injure Gentner, it throws up concerns about player safety.

- Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund saw VAR correctly award them two goals - ruling out a Sokratis foul in the first half to let his goal stand and then awarding a penalty after a handball in the second. Sokratis' goal should never have stood though, as the referee blew his whistle before the ball crossed the line which automatically stops play. Cologne were furious and the club's sporting directo Jörg Schmadtke said the club would protest the result.

- Kevin Volland scored two (nearly three) against Freiburg. He might have been short of form recently, but his record against Freiburg makes this no surprise: Volland has now scored seven in eight league games against Freiburg (more than against any other team). It was also his first brace in two years.

- Eintracht Frankfurt's Luka Jovic made his Bundesliga debut and scored 12 minutes after coming on. Frankfurt lost the game, but the 19-year-old Serbian striker made a perfect start.

Injury update:

- Stuttgart's Christian Gentner suffered a severe concussion, and likely a few broken bones according to his head coach Hannes Wolf. At the end of Stuttgart's game with Wolfsburg, Gentner caught a knee to the head from the out-rushing Koen Casteels and was taken to hospital. Nevertheless, Wolf said he was told by doctors that the captain would be fine.

- Werder Bremen lost Max Kruse for eight weeks after the striker broke his collarbone in their defeat to Schalke. Kruse was operated on the same day and Bremen head coach Alexander Nouri said his loss "hurts badly".

- Borussia Dortmund defender Erik Durm has undergone a hip operation and will likely be out for a month or two.

- Breel Embolo returned to first team football for Schalke after 336 days out.

- Mainz captain Niko Bungert suffered a torn muscle in training the day after defeat to Bayern and will likely be out for at least two weeks.

Bizarre Bundesliga:

Lamine Sane might not have scored the own goal for Werder Bremen against Schalke, but without his acrobatic attempt to clear the ball inside the box, Schalke might never have got on the board. As the defender goes to clear the ball with a bicycle kick, he ends up connecting with teammate Milos Veljkovic - who in turn connects with the ball. The end result? A goal by Werder Bremen for Schalke and an injured teammate was what Sane was left with.
