Bond villains revisited
Austrian Oscar winner Christoph Waltz has been cast as the next Bond villain in the upcoming "007" flick "Spectre." We take a look through the best (and nastiest) Bond villains over the decades.
Jaws - Richard Kiel
Perhaps the most notorious of all Bond villains, Jaws was immortalized in "The Spy who Loved Me" (1977) and "Moonraker" (1979). With his fearsome set of steel teeth, Jaws also had an uncanny ability to survive almost any misfortune...until his ultimate fate. His one and only line has entered film trivia folklore: "Well, here's to us."
General Ourumov - Gottfried John
Starring in "GoldenEye" (1995) alongside the then-new James Bond Pierce Brosnan, German actor Gottfried John received international acclaim for his portrayal of Russian General Ourumov.
Auric Goldfinger - Gert Fröbe
Yet another German cast as a menacing Bond villain, Gert Fröbe's portrayal of Goldfinger in the 1964 film of the same name set the tone for the villains to come. In 2003 the American Film Institute declared him the "49th Greatest Villain of the Past 100 Years."
Francisco Scaramanga - Christopher Lee
He's "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974) - the freelance assassin who could put a chill through any Bond. Keeping the story close to home, Scaramanga was played by Bond creator Ian Fleming's step-cousin, British actor Christopher Lee.
Max Zorin - Christopher Walken, and May Day - Grace Jones
In the last film to star Roger Moore, "A View to a Kill" (1985), James Bond is confronted by the formidable capitalist and Russian secret agent Max Zorin (Christopher Walken) and his foreboding bodyguard and trained killer May Day (Grace Jones).
Rosa Klebb - Lotte Lenya
Working for the much-feared global terrorist organization SPECTRE, Rosa Klebb - played by Lotte Lenya, Austrian actress and wife of acclaimed German composer Kurt Weill - has one mission: to kill 007. "From Russia with Love" (1963) was the second James Bond film and the foundation of what would become the most successful spy series ever.
Raoul Silva - Javier Bardem
As so often in the Bond narrative, "Skyfall" is a tale of revenge. Former M16 operative Raoul Silva - played by Spanish actor Javier Bardem - is on a mission to kill M for betrayal. Bardem's performance - alongside Daniel Craig - would help the 2012 flick become the highest-ever grossing film in the UK, and seventh in the world.
Maximillian Largo - Klaus Maria Brandauer
The world is on the brink of nuclear disaster as two warheads have been appropriated by SPECTRE - of which the cunning Maximillian Largo is front and centre. Played by Austrian actor Klaus Maria Brandauer, "Never Say Never Again" (1983) was also Sean Connery's return to the Bond role after a 12-year hiatus.
Dr. Blofeld - Telly Savalas
The arch-villain of all Bond villains, Ernst Stavro Blofeld (aka Dr. Blofeld) exploded onto the global screen in "On Her Majesty's Service" (1969). Telly Savalas' menacing performance of a nemesis who threatens to sterilize the world's entire food supply remains one of the great moments in the annals of villainry. Savalas starred alongside one-off James Bond George Lazenby.
Elektra King - Sophie Marceau
There are Bond girls and there are Bond villains, but never do the two cross...until Elektra King that is, in "The World is not Enough" (1999). In a rollicking Bond flick with all the twists and turns you would expect plus plenty more, Sophie Marceau's performance is classic 007 material.
