Bundesliga Matchday 1: Christian Pulisic shines, Bayern win
Starting with Bayern Munich's 3-1 opening night win, we walk you through the weekend's games. BVB and Schalke impressed, and a Prince made a Bundesliga return.
Gladbach 1-0 Cologne
The Rhine derby ended in joy for the home side as Cologne struggled to find top gear. Gladbach dominated, but a combination of good goalkeeping from Timo Horn and poor composure from Lars Stindl kept the scores level. Three minutes after the restart, Nicolas Elvedi swept Gladbach ahead. Jhon Cordoba worked hard, but he and his Cologne side were second best throughout.
Freiburg 0-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
No winner could be found in Sunday's first game, despite a handful of debutants on show. Tim Kleindienst tucked away a cross in the first haöf, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside. Frankfurt hit the bar and ended the half 10-1 up in terms of shots but it remained goalless. Kevin Prince Boateng came on late in the game, but couldn't find a winner.
Wolfsburg 0-3 Borussia Dortmund
Marc Bartra scored a potential goal of the season on the opening day as BVB strolled to victory against a poor Wolfsburg. Christian Pulisic opened the scoring, before Bartra curled in superbly from the left-hand side of the box. Pulisic, who had a fantastic day, set up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a third. Mario Götze also impressed as Peter Bosz's Bundesliga debut went to plan.
Schalke 2-0 RB Leipzig
Domenico Tedesco's Bundesliga debut started perfectly as a goal in each half proved enough. Schalke defended well and then rewarded themselves just before the interval after Dayot Upamecano clumsily felled Franco di Santo and Nabil Bentaleb hammered in the penalty. Leipzig scored in the second half, but Poulsen was inches offside. Konoplyanka added a Leipzig-esque second with 17 minutes left.
Hamburg 1-0 Augsburg
Hamburg started the new season in a way only they could. Nicolai Müller scored the opener early, then injured himself while celebrating. Augsburg then slowly took control, had chances but couldn't take them and HSV ended up winning. Given the stormy start to the season off the pitch and the cup exit on it, the win provides much needed relief for Markus Gisdol's HSV.
Hoffenheim 1-0 Werder Bremen
Julian Nagelsmann's side needed a late goal from Andrej Kramaric to seal a win that perhaps flattered the home team. Werder Bremen had the better half and really should have gone ahead, but Florian Kainz somehow missed an open goal. Hoffenheim were better in the second half, and were rewarded when Kramaric's shot took a wicked deflection off Robert Bauer and snuck in.
Hertha Berlin 2-0 Stuttgart
Australian Mathew Leckie scored one very tidy goal and another opportunistic one as Stuttgart struggled in the capital on their Bundesliga return. Hannes Wolf, and six of his players, made their top-flight debuts, but couldn't seize the moment as the experience of the home side proved enough. Leckie, a new signing from Ingolstadt, was the man of the day, but VAR also had a successful outing.
Mainz 0-1 Hannover
Two sides tipped to be in a relegation battle were separated by a former Stuttgart striker. Rene Adler made a brilliant save in the second half to deny Felix Klaus a breakaway goal, but Austrian Martin Harnik's neat finish soon after made the difference in a tight but largely subdued game. Mainz had a few half chances of their own, but Hannover did just enough to get three very big points.
Bayern Munich 3-1 Leverkusen
Bayern Munich's win was fueled in no small part by goals from Corentin Tolisso and Niklas Süle. Süle's was even created by his fellow former Hoffenheim teammate Sebastian Rudy. Bayern were rampant at times in the first half; Tolisso hit the post moments after netting his goal. But Leverkusen launched a brave second-half comeback and left Bayern with plenty to think about, three points or not.
A minute's silence for Barcelona
A somber moment before the season's start, as Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen's players observed a minute's silence to mark the terror attack in Barcelona. All Bundesliga games on Matchday 1 did the same.
