Bundesliga Matchday 28 in pictures
There were important wins for Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig in the chase for Champions League football and the league title this weekend. Elsewhere, Ingolstadt, Hamburg and Freiburg gained all three points.
The Kings of the Elbe
Hamburg are now nine games unbeaten on home soil. The northern Germans moved four points clear of the relegation zone with six games to go. Aaron Hunt is the embodiment of the turnaround at Hamburg, the former Bremen player turning in a superb display to see off Hoffenheim. It's back to the drawing board for Julian Nagelsmann after the defeat.
Derby Hero
Bragging rights went to Mönchengladbach on Saturday after Lars Stindl's winner decided the Rhine Derby against Cologne. Peter Stöger's side missed out on consolidating their European place and lost ground to Freibuig and rivals Gladbach. But again, it was captain Stindl who popped up when it mattered most to score the winner.
Freiburg and The Joker
Nils Petersen is known as 'The Joker' around Freiburg these days. But he's not the bad guy - he is the man the fans love at the picturesque Schwarzwald-Stadion. The 28-year-old went level with Alexander Zickler as the player to score most goals (18) after coming off the bench in the Bundesliga.
Return of Poulsen
Timo Werner was back in Leipzig colors from the beginning for the visit of Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. But the headlines went to substitute Yussuf Poulsen who took advantage of his cameo role, scoring the winner in stoppage time. The 22-year-old from Denmark helped Leipzig stay ahead of Borussia Dortmund in the race for second.
Schalke dig deep
The Royal Blues had no issues in the 4-1 win over Wolfsburg in Gelsenkirchen. After an embarrassing defeat to Werder Bremen, Markus Weinzierl's side had to deliver a big performance - and they did. Leon Goretzka shone in midfield. Thilo Kehrer impressed at the back. Max Meyer was creative. Daniel Caligiuri got on the scoresheet. Just a routine Saturday at the office ...
Evergreen Arjen
When Arjen Robben picks up the ball on Bayern Munich's right wing, everybody in the stadium knows what he is going to do. After all, he's been doing it for almost a decade. In the 49th minute against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday evening, he did it again, cutting inside onto his left foot to curl an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner. Bayern went on to win 4-1. Class really is timeless.
Finally for Frankfurt!
After one goal in eight games, Frankfurt finally found their scoring boots as they drew 2-2 at home to resurgent Werder Bremen. Initially though, it looked like fortune would desert them again - David Abraham's rocket effort unluckily flying back off the bar. Niko Kovac's side have nevertheless dropped well outside of the European places and may now have to satisfied with a mid-table finish.
Not over yet for Ingolstadt
Eight days ago, Ingolstadt were 10 points adrift of safety. Three games, three victories and nine points later, that gap has been reduced to a single point. Against bottom club Darmstadt on Sunday, impressive offensive work from Mathew Leckie, Pascal Groß and Dario Lezcano, plus Markus Suttner's late free-kick, secured a 3-2 win. Survival is suddenly a real possibility.
Too easy for Hertha
Hertha BSC ended their three-game losing streak with a comfortable 2-0 victory over struggling Augsburg to reignite their Europa League dreams. Goals from John Anthony Brooks and Valentin Stocker gave the hosts a half-time lead which the impotent visitors never looked like recovering. Manuel Baum's team were out-passed, out-shot and out-fought in the capital and now face a huge battle to survive.
