Tour de France
July 4, 2009The 15.5-kilometer individual time trial through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo was pretty much the circuit raced by Formula One drivers in the Grand Prix.
Cancellara, who had been predicted to win, covered the technically complex course in 19 minutes and 32 seconds, 18 seconds ahead of second-place finisher and race favorite, Alberto Contador of Spain.
Third place was taken by Bradley Wiggens of Britain, only one second behind Contador.
Andreas Kloeden of Germany crossed the finish line in fourth place 22 seconds down from Cancellara.
Armstrong and Astana looking strong
Seven-time Tour de France cycling champion, Lance Armstrong, celebrated his comeback after a four-year absence with an impressive 10th place finish, 40 seconds behind the winner.
Armstrong's Astana team looked very strong, placing four riders in the top ten, with Contador, Kloeden, Levi Leipheimer in 6th, and Armstrong.
Defending champion, Carlos Sastre, finished outside the top 20, one minute and eight seconds off the pace.
