The number of casualties from the conflict is georgia is difficult to ascertain. According to figures by both Georgian and Russian officials, the death toll stands at 1600. But that figure is in dispute. Facts are hard to come by as independent journalists were allowed only controlled access to the conflict regions in the first days of the war.
