United Nations officials say the earthquake that struck Haiti is the worst disaster ever confronted by the organisation. UN Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator Elizabeth Byrs, blamed the difficulties in co-ordinating the international aid effort on the complete breakdown of Haiti's infrastructure, even at the local level. One of the most urgent problems is getting food and water to the survivors. Some three million people have been affected by the quake.
