Why are Africa's currencies underperforming?

Nigeria's naira has declined by a whopping 38% to the US dollar while Ghana's cedi, the Kenya's shilling and the West African CFA franc have also lost value. Why are African currencies performing so poorly on the world market? And, does the performance of a currency tell the whole story of any country's economy?
