Elvis lives!
Elvis is so omnipresent in contemporary life, one could almost ignore the fact that the King died in 1977. January 8 marks the 80th anniversary of his birth.
Record breaker
Elvis is the most frequently digitally streamed artist of the past decade, according to SoundExchange. In fact, he became the only musician in history to hit the top of the billboard charts in four different decades. Posthumously inducted into the Rockabilly, Gospel, Country, UK Music, and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame, Presley had topped one billion global record sales by 1984.
Graceland
Elvis Presley died at his residence, Graceland, on August 16, 1977. In 1982, the home was opened to the public. With around half a million visitors a year, this historical landmark is the second-most visited residence in the US after the White House. Graceland is part of Elvis Presley Enterprises, which continues to host annual birthday celebrations, certified auctions and fan club events.
Enduring influence
Although the Beatles were disappointed by their meeting with Elvis in 1965, they did jam together. Along with countless other musicians, the Fab Four cited The King as an influence. But who influenced Elvis? He adored black gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, knew the songs of country singer Hank Snow, and otherwise mentioned Marlon Brando and James Dean, whom he called "a genius."
On and off Broadway
Elvis has inspired theater makers since 1960. "Bye Bye Birdie" is based on Elvis' rise to fame, and in 1977 "Jukebox Musical" opened in London's Astoria Theatre. "All Shook Up," with text by Joe DiPietro, hit Broadway in 2005. And 2013 brought "The Million Dollar Quartet," a musical based on the legendary 1956 jam session with Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins.
Dear Mr. Postman
In 1978, a year after the singer's death, Grenada was the first country to honor him with a postage stamp. Germany issued its own Elvis stamp in 1988, as did the US in 1993. 1.2 million Americans cast their ballots - before the Internet and social media - and the majority opted for an image of the younger Elvis. At 500 million, it was the top-selling commemorative stamp of all time.
Elvis in bronze
From 1989 to 1991, The International Rock Awards, honoring top musicians in the rock music genre and attended by a number of celebrities from the music and the film industries, presented a bronze Elvis to winners. Lucky recipients included Eric Clapton and Ozzy Osbourne.
Another bronze Elvis
Perhaps the most famous boy in Brussels, "Manneken Pis" has his own Elvis jumpsuit. The urinating statue has an array of costumes that are regularly put on him. One time - in August 1999 - he was clad as The King.
Elvis museum
In December 2011, three German collectors opened the Elvis Museum in Dusseldorf. The rotating collection has about 1,500 exhibits, with 600 items on display at a time. Comprised mostly of items from Elvis' time as a GI in Germany, the collection shows more of the artist's personal side and features live music as well.
Old is new again
In November 2013, 16-year-old David Thibault entered an Elvis impersonation contest in Quebec and won. Local TV filmed the young singer performing "Blue Christmas," the station posted the video on YouTube, and with 7.4 million hits in 10 days it went viral. Joining the ranks of thousands, Thibault has been impersonating the King since age 12, but now wants to develop his own artistic identity.
Fan events and impersonators
In 2007, the BBC created the "Worlds Greatest Elvis" TV show; one prominent winner is Shawn Klush of Pennsylvania in the US. Graceland has its own "Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest," official Elvis fan clubs exist in 38 countries, and the European Elvis Festival has been going on in Bad Nauheim since 2002.
Elvis for sale
From necklaces to nesting eggs, Elvis memorabilia sells. Elvis Presley Enterprises is a multi-million dollar private company that runs Graceland and manages licensing for the King's estate. The annual Forbes' "Top-Earning Dead Celebrities" list regularly has Presley at or near the top - along with Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor.
