The European Union has formally backed Russia's bid to join the World Trade Organisation, clearing the way for Moscow to join the body in 2011 after 17 years of trying. The EU is the world's largest trading zone and Russia's biggest trading partner. It ended its veto on Russia's WTO accession, primarily because Moscow committed to phase out export tariffs on timber, and lower rail freight fees.
