"We need an electricity supply! First of all, secure electricity for us and then we can learn to save energy. We don't currently have electricity, so how can we save it?"

"Mineral water bottles and lemonade bottles say: It's not our fault that we're littered all over the streets. The person who drinks us and then throws us on the street is guilty."
Asmaa Hwaid, Iraq
"We need to help people living in poverty without intruding on their private sphere."
Mohamed El Wadi, Iraq
"We don't need democracy, we don't need bread, we want an education system as good as yours in the West."
Miriam Noor, Iraq
"You need to teach people how to ration the amount of water and electricity they use. Here in Iraq we don't have a "water-saving" culture. Despite the lack of water, we squander it, just like we squander electricity. We need to cultivate an energy- and water-saving culture. Unfortunately, water is both the cheapest and most valuable resource on Earth. There are no recycling bins in Iraq and you can find heaps of garbage all over the streets in Kirkuk. People are ignorant and believe it is enough when they simply move the garbage away from their own houses. Unfortunately, the word "recycling" doesn't exist in our vocabulary."
