Five years ago today - former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder initiated a series of social and labor market reforms that divided his party and cost him the chancellery. His Agenda 20-10 is still splitting German politics as the Social Democrats lose ground in public opinion polls. Critics say the liberal market reforms have deepened social inequality and created a new underclass. Nevertheless, unemployment is now down and economic growth is up.
