From anniversary pomp to desolate lockdown
Celebrations in China, heat waves in North America, protests in South America, empty streets in Dhaka: Take a look through some of the day's most striking images.
China: The Communist Party turns 100
The Chinese Communist Party has been celebrating 100 years since being founded. The anniversary was marked by several public spectacles, such as this light show in Shanghai.
Dhaka: A city in lockdown
People in Bangladesh have been told to stay in their homes except to buy necessities or for emergencies. The army and police are on alert to stop anyone violating the rules. This lockdown, the most severe in the country so far during the coronavirus pandemic, comes as the number of COVID-19 infections rises dramatically.
Indonesia: Increasing pandemic fatalities
Indonesia has been hit by a new wave of COVID-19 infections, with more than 20,000 new cases being recorded daily. And that could just be the tip of the iceberg, as little testing is going on outside of the capital, Jakarta. Here, workers in PPE bury the coffin of yet another victim.
Colombia: Protesting in Bogota
Colombia has seen a wave of protests starting in April, with more than 60 deaths amid violence. The demonstrations were triggered by a tax raise, but have since transformed into a more general movement opposed to the right-wing government of President Ivan Duque. The economic effects of the pandemic are increasing unrest, with 40% of the country's 50 million inhabitants now plunged into poverty.
Brazil: The face of protest
Michael Mbya, an indigenous man of the Guarani tribe, is seen here protesting in Brasilia against a proposed bill that would allow commercial agriculture and mining on protected tribal reservations. The bill would require tribes who want their lands protected to prove that they had been living in a particular region since the constitution was established in October 1988.
Afghanistan: German Bundeswehr withdraws
Brigadier General Ansgar Meyer (left), the last commander of the Bundeswehr (German military) in Afghanistan, is here seen casing the colors as the last German troops leave Afghanistan. Germany contributed to the NATO-led mission in the country for almost 20 years, with troops operating only in noncombat roles, such as training local forces.
United States: New York swelters
New York has been suffering unusually high temperatures, with medical officials warning people to adapt their behavior. Cooling centers have been opened across five boroughs. Canada, too, has experienced record high temperatures over past days in a heat wave exacerbated by global warming.
