The 2003 German Architecture Prize has been awarded to architects Axel Schulte, Charlotte Frank and Christoph Witt for designing and realizing Germany's Federal Chancellery in Berlin. A jury of well-known architects honored the trio with the €25,000 prize, which is awarded every second year under the patronage of the Federal Chamber of Architects. The Berliners have dubbed Gerhard Schröder's current workplace the "washing machine" after its box-like shape and windowed facade.
