Stuttgart out, Dortmund push on

A double from Bochum's Simon Terodde sent VfB Stuttgart packing from the first round of the German Cup, as the second top-flight casualty fell after Mainz's spot-kick defeat last night.

Terodde's two goals inspired Bochum to victory, leaving Armin Veh with lots to consider following his return to the club, having previously inspired Stuttgart to the German title in 2008.

A tricky fixture on paper immediately became a mountain to climb for Stuttgart after a defensive mix-up between new signing Oriel Romeu and Sven Ulreich allowed Terodde the freedom to score his fourth goal in three matches this season.

The 26-year-old striker netted his second of the afternoon in the 48th minute, as he confidently converted a brilliant end-to-end counter-attack from the second division club.

Despite Veh shaking his pack late in the game, Bochum held the upper-hand for long spells and were unfortunate not to add to their two-goal lead. It's more cup heartache for Stuttgart who dropped out of the German Cup at the second-round stage last season losing to Freiburg. The season before that they were runners-up.

There were few mistakes from the other Bundesliga clubs in action on the day, as they all avoided a dreaded giant-killing. Borussia Dortmund secured their passage to the second round with a 4-1 win over Stuttgarter Kickers.

Returning from injury, Marco Reus wore the captain's armband for the first time in the absence of defender Mats Hummels who sat out and was replaced by Neven Subotic - who also returned from a lengthy injury absence. Dortmund picked up where they left-off on Wednesday after a 2-0 Super Cup triumph over Bayern Munich, netting inside 30 minutes through Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Stuttgarter Kickers proved to be a tough nut to crack, however, defending well and looking bright on the counter-attack. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Dortmund some breathing space after the restart, striking twice either side of Randy Edwini-Bonsu's goal for the third-tier outfit.

Colombian striker Adrian Ramos, who joined from Hertha Berlin this summer, opened his Dortmund account with the fourth and final goal of the game.

Meanwhile, Gladbach defeated FC Homburg by three goals to one. Branimir Hrgota notched a brace and Andre Hahn scored his first competitive goal for the club since moving from FC Augsburg this summer.

Hannover progressed with the same score, although they had to play almost an hour with ten players after Marcelo's first-half dismissal. A double from Joselu and a fine strike from Lars Stindl proved enough see the Bundesliga side progress.

Hertha Berlin will join them in the second round after a 4-2 win at Viktoria Köln - Ronny scoring the pick of the goals.

Elsewhere, one of the Bundesliga's two new faces this season 1.FC Köln netted four times to see-off FT Braunschweig. Nigerian striker Anthony Ujah hit a double, while Matthias Lehmann and Simon Zoller rounded off a comfortable afternoon's work.

Second division pair FC St Pauli and Greuther Fürth progressed with comfortable wins at Optik Rathenow and Waldkirch respectively, while Eintracht Braunschweig squeezed past Bremer SV.

In the first of the later encounters, Kaiserslautern progressed after a penalty shootout at Wehen Wiesbaden following a goalless 90 minutes. Eintracht Frankfurt avoided an upset in Berlin, winning 2-0. FSV Frankfurt sneaked past a brave Siegen on penalties after a thrilling game ended three goals each after 120 minutes - the last game in our live German Cup update.
