German Food: Too Much, Too Sweet

Apart from eating too much in general Germans eat food that's too sweet and too fatty, according to a report released by the German Society for Nutrition (DGE). German Consumer Protection Minister Renate Künast also said her countrymen were watching too much television and exercising to little, adding that only marathon runners actually required the amount of energy intake many Germans consume. The report had some positive news, however: With 1.43 hours set aside for meals each day, Germans spend 21 minutes more on eating than a decade ago. They also eat more fruit and vegetables -- 150 grams (5.3 ounces) per day on average. That's still far below the 650 grams recommended by DGE. "With this amount, women could reduce their risk of getting cancer by 20 percent and men by 30 percent," Künast said, adding that she plans to work with TV bosses to employ the medium for raising awareness about eating healthy.
