Germany claims five nominations for International Emmys

With seven, Brazil led the nominations for the International Emmy Awards, which were announced Monday in New York by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Britain followed close behind with six nominations.

German has claimed five nominations, including best TV movie/miniseries for RTL's "Deutschland 83." The first German-language series to air on a US network, it deals with Cold War tensions as seen through the life of a young spy.

Germany's Florian Stetter (top picture) pocketed a best actor nomination for his role in "Nackt Unter Wölfen" (Naked among wolves), which is an adaptation of a novel by East German author Bruno Apitz. Also nominated for best drama series, it tells the story of prisoners in a Nazi concentration camp who risk their lives to conceal a Jewish boy. Christiane Paul was likewise nominated for her performance in the ARD film "Unterm Radar" (Under the radar).

Both Stetter and Paul will face stiff competition, as Hollywood icons Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench have both been nominated for their roles in the BBC One TV movie "Roald Dahl's Esio Trot." The movie is based on a novel by the famous children's book author, about an elderly bachelor who tries to woo the widow in the apartment below. She, however, is infatuated with her pet tortoise.

Germany's "Krieg der Lügen" (War of lies) also took a nomination in the best documentary film category, rounding out the country's five nominations.

While Germany went away empty-handed in 2015, it claimed the best miniseries prize in 2014 with"Generation War," a three-part World War II epic.

Brazil's nominees include Alexandre Nero for best actor (in "A Regra do Jogo") and Grazi Massafera for best actress (in "Verdades Secretas"). In addition to Hoffman and Dench, Britain's candidates include "Hoff the Record" for comedy and "Capital" in the TV movie/miniseries category.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced a total of 40 nominees in 10 categories and from 15 countries. While the US Emmys were awarded in mid-September, the international awards will be handed out in New York on November 21.
