Goal-line technology to be used in European clubs finals
March 4, 2016After a meeting of the Executive Committee in Nyon, Switzerland, UEFA announced that the 2016 Europa League and Champions League finals will use goal-line technology.
Its use was approved by the International football association board in 2012. This technology, which determinds whether or not the ball has completely crossed the line, is already in place in major domestic leagues in Europe, including the Bundesliga, but not in the major European club competitions.
It was used in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and will be used in the EURO 2016 competition in France.
In January, UEFA announced that the 2016-2017 Europa League and Champions League seasons would have goal-line technology. In addition, UEFA have said they will continue to use assistant referees on the goal-line alongside the technology.
The 2016 Europa League final will take place on May 18 in Basel, Switzerland, and the 2016 Champions League final is to be held on May 28 in Milan, Italy.
