Manchester City 5-3 Monaco
February 21, 2017Manchester City 5-3 Monaco
(Sterling 26', Aguero 58' 71', Stones 77', Sane 82' - Falcao 32' 61', Mbappe 40')
Bayern Munich fans came to expect a certain degree of control under Pep Guardiola, yet what Manchester City fans witnessed under the Calatan coach on Wednesday night was pure, utter chaos at the Etihad Stadium.
Playing host to an ambitious Monaco side, the former English champions looked relatively in control when former Schalke winger Leroy Sane broke through the French defence and squared the ball to Raheem Sterling, who casually knocked it home.
Then the madness started. Six minutes after City opened the scoring Monaco equalized through the diving head of Radamel Falcao before 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe bundled home a second five minutes before half time. In the space of eight minutes the guests had turned the match on its head.
If Guardiola had any words of wisdom at half time they didn't ring true immediately, when just five minutes after the restart Nicolas Otamendi brought Falcao down in the box. Yet the Colombian striker made a poor attempt from the spot and spared the clumsy defender any further embarrassment.
Monaco were forced to regret the failed conversion almost immediately when a City counter attack ended with Sergio Aguero scoring an outstanding finish via the fumbled hands of goalkeeper Danijel Subasic. City had regained their composure and were level.
Yet Monaco then struck again. This time with some added class. Just minutes after Aguero's impressive solo effort, Falcao one-upped him with a breathtaking chip that made a mockery of Guardiola's defence and put the French side back in front.
Any suggestions that that may have indeed been that lasted a grand total of 10 minutes until Aguero once again popped up to volley home a finish from former Wolfsburg star Kevin de Bruyne's corner. Six minutes later the Belgian star swung in another cross and this time found Stones to knock it home at the back post.
Then to complete the who's who of former Bundesliga talents, Sane once again popped up to complete a wonderful, silky transition of play that saw City's star-studded front line simply glide through the Monaco defence. City had finally claimed victory in a crazy match that could have gone either way.
