Fatal shooting at Manila airport
December 20, 2013Manila international airport general Manager Jose Honrado said the victims included Ukol Talumpa, the mayor of Labangan town in the troubled southern Philippines.
Also killed were his wife and two bodyguards. Four other persons were wounded as the mayoral group emerged from a packed passenger terminal.
Talumpa won a hotly contested election for mayor in an election last May, defeating the incumbent who is a political ally of President Benigno Aquino.
Honrado said airport security forces chased two gunmen but they escaped on a motorcycle in the heavy late-morning traffic outside the terminal.
"We are still investigating the motive," General Manager Honrado said. "Government agencies are trying their best to determine the perpetrators and bring them to justice."
There was no word on a possible motive but political killings and assassinations are common in the Philippines.
