Houston shooting leaves several injured
September 26, 2016Police shot and killed a gunman who had opened fire at a strip mall in Houston, Texas, on Monday.
Houston police confirmed via Twitter that the shooter was dead on arrival at a local hospital. They also said that there were no reports of other suspects or accomplices.
Assistant Police Chief Richard Man said that the severity of the injuries among the victims varied. One victim is reportedly in critical condition, five are being in treated and three were treated and have since been released.
The gunman was reportedly a lawyer. Police said that there were issues at his firm and that they were investigating whether these led to the shooting. Police have not revealed his full identity.
Numerous additional firearms were found inside the shooter's black Porsche. A bomb disposal team also investigated the vehicle for explosives. None were found.
Between 30 and 50 shots fired at commuters
While it remains unclear how the incident unfolded, witnesses told reporters that the shooter began firing at passing cars from an area near an apartment complex at 6.30 a.m. (1230 UTC).
A cameraman for Houston broadcaster KTRK witnessed the shooting. "The shots were coming almost non-stop. Four, five, six at a time," he told the station. He estimated that between 30 and 50 shots were fired.
