The Berlin Philharmonic is celebrating the 50th birthday of its iconic building this month. The building, right at the edge of what was once West Berlin, in the Tiergarten park, consists of three superimposed concentrically rotated pentagons covered in a gold-lamé facade. Architectural figures say it's one of the few modern buildings to have retained its magic so many years after construction. Music lovers say its design -which places the audience around the orchestra- makes for a performance experience unlike any other in the world.
