Immendorff Exhibit
Joerg Immendorff
The world's largest exhibition of works by the renowned German artist Joerg Immendorff has opened at the Congress Center in Hamburg and runs through Aug. 10. Some 650 works from all periods of the artist's life are displayed over 2,300 square meters (10,800 square feet) of exhibition space. Curator Dirk Geuer, who worked with Immendorff for 18 years, said the artist particularly liked the idea of temporary exhibitions, as the space could be made to suit the art. In existing museums, on the other hand, art has to fit into prescribed restriction. Immendorff was one of Germany's best-known artists of the post-war period. The former school teacher expressed his political, cultural and social views through his paintings and sculptures. He died of complications caused by Lou Gherig's disease on May 18, 2007, nine years after being diagnosed with the nerve disorder. Click through the gallery for a look at some of his work.
