In Pictures: Global outage grounds travel, hospitals, shops

Planes stuck on the tarmac
Numerous airports and airlines around the world were affected by Friday's disruptions, with many flights delayed or canceled. The major US carrier American Airlines said that it was resuming its flights after the global IT outage grounded all of its planes.

Hospitals and clinics were also affected
Germany's University Clinic in Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) was among various medical facilities hit by the outage. Elective surgeries were canceled, and outpatient clinics were closed in its two locations; Kiel and Lübeck.

Times Square billboards shut down
The outage even affected some iconic landmarks, such as New York City's Times Square. Many of the square's electronic billboards went blank on Friday.

Courts close their doors
Some governmental bodies had to halt activities due to the outage. The Manhattan Criminal Courthouse in New York was among such establishments, where the arrangements information room could not answer questions.

Some supermarkets shut branches
Many retail establishments also suffered. A German supermarket chain, Tegut, had to close more than 300 stores after the global tech disruptions brought operations to a halt.

CrowdStrike says outage due to 'content upgrade'
The CEO of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said a "content upgrade" was responsible for the global outage on Microsoft systems. The cybersecurity firm provides security software for cloud computing, such as Microsoft's Azure platform.
A massive tech outage has brought several sectors and institutions to a halt globally, affecting travel, medical care, retail and even some governmental services.
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said the disruptions were not a result of a security incident or cyberattack, adding that it has issued a fix.
