In their own words: quotes from the final
Jubilation for Bayern, dejection for Dortmund - no surprises there. But the relief of aging players, a coach's final hurrah, and the chin-up attitude of a team with a bright future are what mark these post-game comments.
Jupp Heynckes
(Bayern coach): "In the first half, especially, we struggled to find our feet [...] the burden of being favorites was clear to see in the opening 20 minutes [...] we worked incredibly hard for this success. Regarding my future, I can say that my decision [on his post-Bayern future] – which I'll announce June 30 – was made last summer after the loss in the Champions League final."
Jupp Heynckes
"I'm really happy for the Schweinsteiger / Lahm generation, also for Ribery, Robben, van Buyten, Pizarro, Tymoshchuk – they are all older players who know: if we didn't do it this year, it was going to get tricky at some point. You don't get to the Champions League final every year."
Jürgen Klopp
(Dortmund coach): "It was a close game that was decided late […] but, it's deserved. Congratulations to Bayern, and heart-felt congratulations to Jupp [Heynckes]. If we had lost 4:0 or 5:0, that would have been much worse for me. We were able to keep up."
Uli Hoeness
(Bayern President): "For Jupp it's an incredible finish, at least in Munich and in Germany. He did a sensational job here. To keep a team that has so many stars going and to keep bringing such high performance – that's the signature of Jupp Heynckes. I'd like to thank him for that from the bottom of my heart."
Philipp Lahm
(Bayern captain): "The pressure was enormous, on each one of us. […] we didn't know if we'd get another chance to win the Champions League. I've always said: if you want to become a golden generation, you've got to win titles. Bastian Schweinsteiger and I have played together for 16 years, right from the youth setup. It's great we can celebrate this together. Now we want the treble."
Roman Weidenfeller
(Dortmund keeper): "We're really proud that we were able to offer our best against Bayern. We played a great game, but it wasn't meant to be. Unfortunately we weren't able to win. That's really sad for us, because we played a great Champions League season. We've got to live with that and will give it another go next year."
Arjen Robben
(Scored game-winner for Bayern): "It was such a tight game, it was really neck-and-neck. Then that last minute: I reacted to Franck [Ribery, who set up Robben's goal], he put the ball into my path and I was able to slot it home. This means so very much to me that I can't really get a grasp on it. So many emotions. A lot of people told me: 'you'll score that goal…'"
Mats Hummels
(Dortmund defender, jumping): "Of course there is nothing that can be done about the disappointment. Especially when it happens so close to the end due to a stroke of luck, even if Bayern were better in the second half. We got a little tired at the end."
Thomas Müller
(Bayern midfielder): "I'm physically spent. I'm finished; I've got cramps left and right. […] I'm especially happy for Jupp Heynckes. If you've played a record-breaking season [most points scored] in the Bundesliga, and if he's able to get the treble [league, cup, and CL titles] in what might be his last season… he can be glad he's 68 and not 28, because you'd have to retire then, too."
Marco Reus
(Dortmund midfielder): "At the end – that's really bitter. We were all preparing ourselves for extra time. Then, we don't pay close enough attention, and Robben pounced on that and scored the decisive goal. Everyone is disappointed that we weren't able to do it. We displayed an incredible effort for 90 minutes, but at the end we're left standing without the cup – and that's what counts."
