Conflicting reports emerged on Monday about the whereabouts of former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze. A spokesman for Germany’s Federal Border Guard confirmed to reporters earlier in the day that Shevardnadze had landed in the southern German spa town of Baden-Baden. But an opposition spokesman in Georgia told reporters that the former president had not yet left the country. There has been much speculation in recent days that he might come to Germany. A government spokesman said on Sunday that Shevardnadze would be welcome here because of his key role in helping West and East Germany reunite in 1990, when he was the Soviet Union's foreign minister.
