James Rodriguez grabs first goal as Bayern crush Schalke

That's it then, the whistle has blown on the night's three late games.

James Rodriguez was the star for Bayern Munich as the Colombian playmaker scored his side's second after a lovely feint then turned provider with a sumptuous chipped assist for Arturo Vidal's third. Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring for Bayern with an early penalty.

Last year's runners up Leipzig, who made several changes, stumbled again, losing 1-0 to Augsburg who move up to third - at least until tomorrow.

Martin Schmidt couldn't get off to a winning start with Wolfsburg despite taking the lead in the first half. Werder Bremen stormed back in the second period to leave with a 1-1 draw, though they may have felt they should have got more after a strong second half showing.

In the evening's early game, Borussia Mönchengladbach brushed aside Stuttgart with a Raffael double.

Nearly a fourth for the champions, who've been rampant in this second period. James got on the end of a Müller cross but, off-balance, could only hit the keeper.

Delaney with Bremen's latest effort but it's blocked. After registering 1 shot in the first half, they've now had 9.

83' Augsburg 0 - 1 RB Leipzig

The hosts could have settled it there. Heller burst in to the box to meet a cross from the right but couldn't keep his free header down.

Kampl blazes way over for Leipzig from a decent position. They are staring down the barrel of a second Bundesliga defeat this season.

The visitors really should be in front. Wolfsburg forced to hack off the line again.

And there it is. James with a wonderful, ummm... I'm going to call it a flip chip, scooping the ball over a defender after sweeping his foot from left to right to substitute Vidal, who sidefoots home on the volley.

Gebre Selaisse rattles the post for Bremen after taking down a flighted ball well, his follow up is then blocked. The momentum seems to be with the visitors now.

65' -- Augsburg 1 - 0 RB Leipzig

The Red Bulls still can't find a way back in to the game - Werner the latest to be denied. 

63' -- Schalke 0 - 2 Bayern Munich

The hosts haven't given up yet, with Goretzka continuing to probe. They have a half decent penalty shout on Burgstaller turned down before Breel Embolo is booked for petulantly kicking the ball away after a foul. But Bayern are confident enough to remove Lewandowski for Thiago.

Bayern pushing hard for a third. Coman and Rudy combine to set Rafinha free but he can't make the cross count. At the other end, Geretzka drives wide.

GOAL! Delaney's cross from the left takes a nick off a defender and Bartels strains his neck to power a header home. Excellent header that, he had to make a lot of the power after the deflection. Fair to say the club's Tweeters are pleased.

Bruma, Leipzig's tricky winger, blazes one past the post from the corner of the box. The Red Bulls have some work to do here.

The visitors bossing the ball here, toying with their opponents. Müller, who hit the posts, and Lewandowski have gone close and a third doesn't feel far off.

Decent chance for Bremen as Casteels spills one that falls to Kainz, whose effort is cleared off the line.

The visitors yet to make any real impact here, they've had just one shot. They do have a contender for worst Bundesliga kit though. Purple shirts, orange socks. Really?

41' -- Schalke 0 - 2 Bayern Munich

James almost has a second as his left wing cross nearly floats in, but Fährmann gets a hand to it.

38' -- Augsburg 1 - 0 RB Leipzig

The hosts still looking dangerous in this one, Hinteregger going close with a deflected volley. 

32' -- Schalke 0 - 2 Bayern Munich

Schalke almost get one back after a scramble in the box forces Martinez to hack off the line.

30' -- Schalke 0 - 2 Bayern Munich

GOAL! James scores on his full Bundesliga debut. The Colombian was cleverly worked in by Müller and dropped his shoulder to send Fährmann the wrong way before rolling in the front post.

29' -- Wolfsburg 1 - 0 Werder Bremen

GOAL! The first strike of the Martin Schmidt era goes to his team and it's scored by Origi who gets his boot to a teasing left wing cross from Ntep.

25' -- Schalke 0 - 1 Bayern Munich

GOAL! Lewandowski rolls the ball in to the left hand corner from the spot and Bayern lead.

23' -- Schalke 0 - 0 Bayern Munich

Schalke have a goal disallowed for offside and then Bayern get a penalty for handball. Looked like a harsh one, as the ball deflects up on to Naldo's hands after he blocked a James cross.

22' -- Wolfsburg 0 - Werder Bremen 

Tentative start to this one. Both these sides have plenty of pressure on them - Bremen still winless and Wolfsburg starting life under Schmidt.

18' -- Augsburg 1 - 0 RB Leipzig

Sabitzer goes close with an arrow of a shot from just outside the box.

12' Schalke 0 - 0 Bayern Munich

Bayern have had the better of the opening, with three shots to none - Tolisso the latest to test Fährmann after Rudy went close. But no goals to report in Gelsenkirchen yet.

10' -- Augsburg 1 - 0 RB Leipzig

Leipzig try to force their way back in as Kampl looks for Werner, but the keeper reads it well. But Gregoritsch almost gets a second! He blazes wide from the left hand side of the box. Great game so far this one.

4' --  Augsburg 1 - 0 RB Leipzig

Augsburg take an early lead. They broke strongly through Caiuby, whose shot was saved. But Finnbogason recovered the ball and found Gregoritsch, who swept home.

1' -- And we're off in the final three games of the night.

As well as that game we have Martin Schmidt's first game in charge of Wolfsburg - they host Werder Bremen and Augsburg v Leipzig..  

With the starter over, it's on to the main course. Schalke (in 4th) take on 3rd place Bayern. The champions have rung the changes, with a full Bundesliga debut for James Rodriguez. There's also no Hummels or Boateng at the back - both are benched.

 

Borussia Mönchengladbach 2 - 0 Stuttgart

FULL TIME: That's it. A deserved win for Gladbach in a pretty mediocre game. On to the next ones.

89' -- Raffael withdrawn to make sure of an individual ovation. Bobadilla on.

87' -- After that brief flurry from the visitors, it's all settled down again.

83' -- Torodde again goes close with a header and Beck blazes over from the right. Where was this Stuttgart earlier?

80' -- As I say that, the visitors have their best chance. Torodde breaks through but, under pressure from two defenders can't get quite enough on the strike. Might've made for an interesting last 10 minutes if that had gone in.

77' -- Brekalo strikes hopefully from miles out for Stuttgart but it's low and can't get past the crowd of legs in the box. The visitors have provided very little in an attacking sense tonight.

74' -- PENALTY TO GLADBACH.

And Raffael tucks it home. A slightly soft-looking penalty, a Stuttgart defender put a hand on Hazard's shoulder and the Belgian went to ground. That is probably that.

73' -- Yellow for Torodde after a late challenge. Probably deserved.

68' -- Sippel now makes a smart stop from an overhit cross as Stuttgart start pushing for an equalizer. A second for Gladbach on the break seems the more likely outcome at this stage though.

66' -- Mangala has an effort from the edge of the box but it's tame and Sippel gobbles it up. He's on for a fourth clean sheet in four Bundesliga starts.

60' -- There's a break in play as the away corner of the ground is ablaze with flares. A good time to tell you that Germany's women have beaten Czech Republic 1-0 away in their World Cup qualifier. Stuttgart make a change, Asano off Brekalo on.

57' -- GOAL! Raffael. The Brazilian pushes the ball right to Elvedi, then carries on in to the box and meets the cross with a crisp volley. Zieler may have done better, it was a decent strike but fairly close to him.

53' -- Another corner for the hosts and Vestergaard heads over. 

51' -- Wendt wins a corner after galloping down the left. But it comes to nothing.

48' -- Similarly to the first half opening, Gladbach dominating the ball, Stuttgart looking compact.

46' -- And we're off again. Kramer has been replaced following his head injury. Cuisance on.

HALF TIME - - I'm sure we're not the only ones glad to hear the whistle. That was a pretty desperate half. Just that Stindl effort on target. Let's hope for better after the break.

43' -- Mangala unleashes from distance. An excellent effort from the Stuttgart man but it whistles just over the bar. 

39' -- Still not much to report here but Germany's women's team have just taken the lead in their World Cup qualifier with the Czech Republic through an own goal. They are in to the second half in that game. 

34' -- Stindl draws the first save of the match with the best bit of play so far. The Germany man picked up a clearance on the edge of the box, tricked his man, then fired a decent effort. But comfortably saved by Zieler.

32' -- More nice play to work the ball wide, more dreadful delivery. Stuttgart the guilty party for a change.

29' -- It's hard to disagree with this summary from @Bundesliga4u.

26' -- Kramer is back on the pitch. But he has the bizarre combination of blue plaster between the eyebrows and tissue up the nose. Not the strongest look.

24' -- Kramer down after a clash of heads with a Stuttgart player. He seems to be ok but we've already learnt this week how careful football needs to be with head injuries. Kramer will also know only too well, he's the man who suffered a head injury in the 2014 World Cup final.

20' -- Stuttgart making this tough for Gladbach but Wendt finds some space down the left after a nice 1-2 with Raffael. The cross, once again, is dreadful.

16' -- Herrmann has a decent sight of goal for Gladbach after he's found in space on the edge of the box following a short corner. He drags a pathetic effort in to the onrushing defenders.

14' Stuttgart pressing high and then becoming compact if they don't win the ball early. That tactic is forcing Gladbach wide and their delivery hasn't been up to it so far.

11' -- The hosts work the ball nicely across the pitch to Hazard but his cross is poor.

5' -- The hosts still pushing forward, Raffael dropping deep to decent effect thus far. But Stuttgart have gone the closest, Terrode glancing a header wide when a better contact would've troubled Sippel.

3'-- Gladbach stroking the ball around well in the early stages but not much action at either end of the pitch yet.

1' -- And we're off. Stuttgart in their red away kit.

-- The Stuttgart players are all wearing Gentner shirts as they emerge from the tunnel. As we previously mentioned, the skipper is out after he suffered a shocking head injury at the weekend. Just a couple of minutes to go now.

-- Sommer picked up a knee injury, which kept him out of training yesterday, so Sippel gets his opportunity. The omens are good for the new man between the sticks though.

Stuttgart are without skipper Christian Gentner after his collision with Wolfsburg keeper Koen Casteels at the weekendand Holger Badstuber, who has an adductor injury.

Then RB Leipzig travel to Augsburg, Martin Schmidt takes charges of Wolfsburg for the first time when they play struggling Werder Bremen and the big one - 3rd placed Bayern (that sounds weird) at 4th-placed Schalke (also a little strange).
