#MayThe4thBeWithYou: Internet celebrates Star Wars Day

On May 4, Star Wars fans celebrate George Lucas' space opera in what has become a yearly tradition. The choice of date is based on "May the fourth" which rhymes with the movies' famous catchphrase "may the Force be with you."

On Twitter, individual fans used the hashtags #Maythe4thBeWithYou or #MaytheFourthBeWithYou to pay tribute to their favorite characters often tweeting quotes and pictures of themselves in costume.

Some could not resist to add to the original joke.

Star Wars actors also joined in, including Daisy Ridley, who played Rey, the main character in the saga's latest installment, "The Force Awakens," released last December.

Institutions were quick to post their tweets, particularly those who have something to do with space or science including NASA and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Companies also joined in on the fun.

And, since this is of course an election year in the US, politics were never going to be very far away.

Republican candidate John Kasich posted a video imitating the iconic "Star Wars" introduction scene while supporters of Bernie Sanders reworked one of his quotes.
