Djokovic beaten by Murray in Montreal

Murray beat Djokovic 6-4 4-6 6-3 to take the Rogers Cup on the hardcourt in Montreal, Canada. It was the Scot's first win over Djokovic since the 2013 Wimbledon final.

Murray dedicated Sunday's victory to his coach Amelie Mauresmo, who gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday. "I'm not sure she will have stayed up to watch this one but, Amelie, this one's for you," Murray said. It was his 35th career title.

Going into the match with an eight-match losing streak to the world number one, Murray dictated play from the baseline from the start. Courtside temperatures reached as high as 40C.

Murray had 19 break points on the Serbian player's serve and took the first set after breaking Djokovic for a 6-4 win.

Djokovic responded by taking the first eight points of the second set but Murray fought back to equal at 3-3 before Djokovic broke again and went on to take the set 6-4.

Murray broke Djokovic's serve in the second game of the final set and held a key, 18-minute long service game to keep his lead at 4-1. Djokovic denied Murray three match points at 5-2 before the 28-year old went on to serve out the match with his fifth championship point, taking the final set 6-3.

As a result of the win, Murray will return to Number 2 in the world rankings for the first time since 2013, just behind Djokovic.The Serb keeps a 19-9 winning record against Murray.

Both players will next head to Cincinnati for the Western & Southern Open ahead of the US Open at the end of the month.
