Group F: Nigeria, Argentina win
June 22, 2014Bosnia-Herzegovina's first World Cup campaign will end in the group stages after Nigeria's narrow 1-0 win in the last game of day 10 in Brazil.
Peter Odemwingie scored the only goal of the game, a close-range tap-in after a low cross from Emmanuel Emenike, but this strike on 29 minutes was not the first to hit the back of the net, however.
Bosnia-Herzegovina had scored 10 minutes earlier, after playmaker Zvjezdan Misimovic played Edin Dzeko in behind the Super Eagles' defense. The linesman raised his flag for offside and the goal did not stand - replays suggested that the call was close, but wrong.
Both sides were visibly struggling in the heat of Cuiaba even before the half-time break, making for a slow game in the second period. Yet the reigning African Cup of Nations champions created more chances in the second period, especially through lively attacker Emenike.
Bosnia-Herzegovina, fighting the prospect of mathematical exclusion, saved their best opportunities for the very end of the game. Star striker Edin Dzeko, a former Wolfsburg man who's currently with Manchester City, twice missed from close range - first with his head, before his weaker left-foot shot clipped the post in stoppage time. Dzeko's teammate Misimovic was so exhausted by the end that he missed his kick altogether when a chance presented itself on the edge of the box.
Bosnia therefore become the first side to drop out of Group F, hours after Argentina had become the first to progress.
Last-minute Messi magic
Iran frustrated Argentina by packing the midfield and closing their opponents down wide, which meant Argentina took a while to get into the game. After a few poor touches in decisive moments, Lionel Messi and Co. began to find their groove. Sergio Aguero saw his curling effort saved by a sprawling Alireza Haghighi, before left back Rojo headed wide from a corner. Both sides then exchanged misses from corners as half time came without a change in the score.
The second half included more of the same frustration for Argentina as Carlos Queiroz's Iran remained resilient. After Messi fired wide, Iran dared to believe an even greater upset was possible as Reza Ghoochannejhad's header forced a smart save from Sergio Romero. Former Bundesliga man Askhan Dejagah then flicked his own superb header goalwards, only to be denied by a top reflex save by Romero. In fact, both goalkeepers proved to be the best players on the pitch, keeping the scores level.
It looked as though Iran were going to be rewarded for their heroic efforts, but in stoppage time Lionel Messi curled in a late winner from the edge of the box to break Iranian hearts and send Argentina through to the knockout stages. Messi was similarly quiet in Argentina's 2-1 Bosnia-Herzegovina, save for his unstoppable long-range goal.
