Europe's organic garden

September 8, 2015

A lot of farm land in Moldova has long been abandoned but as a result of the agricultural crisis, the soil has not been exposed to pesticides, creating ideal conditions for growing organic food.

Organic is worth it

Project title: Green, climate-related investments in eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central-Asia

Project goal: Train and support farmers in the implementation of organic agriculture, help to increase production and trade of organic agricultural products by building the capacity of the private sector to access growing international and European markets for organic products. Long-term, the aim is to make 20 percent of agricultural land organic by 2025.

Moldova was once considered "the orchard of the Soviet Union". The fertile black soil was the bedrock for about a quarter of the fruit and vegetable production for the entire Soviet Union. Even today, agriculture is the main industry of the Republic. However, the crops are - after decades of pesticide use and monoculture production - less and less profitable. The solution could be organic agriculture. The NGO ProRuralInvest wants a switch to bioproducts - which are also demanded in the European Union. The change has effects for Moldova: better environmental protection, more biodiversity and a growing environmental awareness.
