Italy's prime minister Romano Prodi has resigned after losing a crucial vote of confidence in the Senate. Prodi lost support of some of his own allies. A junior government partner defected from his centre-left coalition earlier this week. That left Prodi without a majority in the Senate. Now it's up to the Italian president to decide whether to call elections or set up a transitional government.
