Russian invasion of Ukraine: The sporting reaction
The sporting world has punished Russia for the country's military operations in Ukraine. Drastic measures have been taken, with Russia set to miss the men's football World Cup.
No World Cup for Russia?
FIFA decided to suspend the Russian national football team and clubs from international competition, seemingly barring the men's team from November's World Cup. Initially FIFA resisted calls for an all-out suspension but Poland refused to play Russia in March's World Cup playoffs, forcing FIFA's hand.
Champions League final moved
UEFA decided to move May's Champions League final from Gazprom Arena in St. Petersburg to Paris' Stade de France. The European football confederation also announced that Russia and Russian teams are suspended from international competition, with the Russian women set to miss July's Euros.
Schalke to cut ties with Gazprom
The German football club decided to end its partnership with Gazprom, a state-backed Russian energy firm that has sponsored the club since 2007. The sponsorship was set to run until 2025 and would have given Schalke €9 million ($10 million) — €15 million if the Gelsenkirchen-based club earned promotion back to the Bundesliga.
F1 Russian Grand Prix canceled
Formula One struck September's Russian Grand Prix from its calendar in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The move came after Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel said he would not participate in the race, which has taken place annually at the Sochi Autodrom since 2014.
Putin kicked out of judo federation
The International Judo Federation temporarily suspended the honorary presidency of Russian President Vladimir Putin citing the "ongoing war conflict in Ukraine." Putin is a keen judoka and possesses a black belt in the martial art.
No more ski events in Russia
Skiing's governing body (FIS) as well as the International Biathlon Union (IBU) have called off remaining events set to take place in Russia, due to the invasion of Ukraine.
Finnish hockey side pulls out of KHL playoffs
Finnish ice hockey team Jokerit pulled out of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Club chairman Jari Kurri said it was "impossible" to continue their season in the Russian-based league. The Finnish side was set to take part in the playoffs after finishing the season second in the league's West Division.
