Schalke vs. Inter
March 18, 2011The draw for the quarterfinals of the Champions League has been made at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, France, with titleholders Inter Milan facing off against the lone-remaining German side Schalke.
Inter will host the first match of the two-legged quarterfinal on April 5 or 6. Schalke will host the second match on April 12 or 13.
One of the highlights of the draw in Nyon was the all-English quarterfinal match between Chelsea and current Premier League leaders Manchester United. The first game of that series will be in Manchester.
Rounding out the draw, Real Madrid host Tottenham Hotspur in the first round and FC Barcelona host Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.
Schalke's path to Wembley
The draw also determined potential match-ups in the semi-final. Should Schalke beat Inter Milan, who needed a last-minute goal to eliminate Bayern Munich from the competition earlier this week, they would face either Chelsea or Manchester United in the semi-final.
Schalke parted company with their coach Felix Magath earlier this week. Magath was replaced Thursday by Ralf Rangnick, who had until then coached at Hoffenheim.
Should the two Spanish sides, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, both advance from the quarterfinal, it would set up an all-Spanish battle for one of the spots in the final at London's Wembley Stadium on May 28.
