To carry out extensive repair work the house had to first be emptied of all furniture. According the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the cultural institution responsible for the residence, the wooden floor, walked over by thousands of visitors every year, and the historic window frames needed to be repaired. Now the rooms in the Schiller residence have been reopened to the public. These include his study, which has been restored to the way it was during his lifetime. The house combines authentic items from Schiller's properties with comparable additions and contemporary decor.

Friedrich Schiller - with Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the most important writer of the German Weimar Classicism - bought the residence in 1802. He lived there with his family until his death in 1805. The family continued to live in the house until his wife, Charlotte von Schiller's death in 1826. The poet's residence and the Schiller Museum, which is in the same building compound, had more than 100, 000 visitors last year alone.
