Spain book Euro place
October 9, 2015Goals from Santi Cazorla and Paco Alcacer confirmed that defending European Championship winners Spain have a place at the tournament in France next summer. Switzerland also confirmed its place at the international tournament with several Bundesliga players on the scoresheet against San Marino.
Following Cazorla's opener, Valencia striker Alcacer bagged a second-half brace before Cazorla added another before the end, to give Spain a 4-0 win over Luxembourg in Group C. Elswhere in the group, Ukraine and Belarus picked up wins over Macedonia (2-0) and Slovakia (1-0) respectively.
Bayer Leverkusen's Admir Mehmedi and Hamburg's Johan Djourou helped Switzerland to romp San Marino 7-0 in Group E. The wins confirms Switzerland's place behind England in the group, with Roy Hodgson's side picking up a comfortable 2-0 win over Estonia, having already qualified for the tournament. Slovenia and Lithuania played out a 1-1 draw in the group's other fixture.
In Group G, a Zlatan Ibrahimovic brace gave Sweden a 2-1 away win against Liechtenstein, but the Paris-Saint Germain forward almost missed from the penalty spot. Russia overcame Moldova 2-1 and Austria snatched a late 3-2 win against Montenegro in the group's over matches.
