Sri Lanka's military says the Tamil Tiger leader Prabhakaran has been killed

Sri Lankan military officials say LTTE leader - Vellu-pilllai Prabhakaran was shot dead on Monday while trying to flee government troops. Earlier authorities claimed his son and several top LTTE commanders had been killed. Fighting is still continuing along a small strip of land in the north of the island nation.. although on Sunday a website linked to the Tamil Tigers declared a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons. The government says it has rescued thousands of civilians trapped by the fighting, but the UN's human rights body is calling for an investigation into civilian casualites.
