Super Cup rivalry: Bayern Munich vs Chelsea, Guardiola vs Mourinho
"There is no desire for revenge," Bayern club president Uli Hoeness insisted ahead of Friday's standoff - referring to his club's painful defeat in the Champions League final at Bayern's Allianz Arena 15 months ago.
No desire for revenge?
When Bayern Munich lost the 2012 Champions League final 3-4 in a penalty shoot-out at home in the Allianz Arena against Chelsea, the pain went deep. Bayern players and then-coach Jupp Heynckes said later it had been a traumatic experience and it took them months to recover. Still Bayern club president Uli Hoeness insists: "There is no desire for revenge."
Clash of star coaches reloaded
In their 15 encounters in Spanish competitions and the Champions League at top clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid, Pep Guardiola managed seven wins and five draws. Guardiola won 14 trophies at the helm of Barcelona. Jose Mourinho, controversial for his attacks on other teams and referees, has won 19 titles with Madrid, Porto, Inter Milan and Chelsea.
Who has more silverware?
In May Chelsea won the Europa League Cup, which was their fifth international title. They also boast 19 national titles. The club is seeded fourth in UEFA's club rankings, which are based on performance in international competitions. Bayern have bagged 39 national league and cup tiles to go with nine international trophies; they're ranked second by UEFA - below Barcelona and above Real Madrid.
Big names, big numbers
Both Chelsea and Bayern have impressive fan support and a long history: Chelsea was founded in 1905, and their Stamford Bridge stadium in London seats 41,837 spectators. Bayern Munich can top that, though: Founded in 1900, the club has 187,000 members. It's Allianz Arena in Munich has a capacity of 71,137. And just like Stamford Bridge, it is always sold out.
Successful management
Bayern President Uli Hoeness takes personal pride at Bayern's recent success. He helped shape the club, first as a player and later a manager. He ensured the club's profitability in nine of the last 10 seasons, with a record profit of 373.4 million euros ($500 million) in 2012 alone. Bayern Munich is ranked fifth on the Forbes list of most valuable club brands worldwide.
Chelsea's wealth backed by Russian oligarch
Roman Abramovich has owned the Chelsea Football Club since 2003. In 2012 the club posted its first profit since then: 1.4 million pounds (1.6 million euros, $2.1 million). But its funding is not likely to dry up: According to the British newspaper, The Sunday Times' "Rich List," Abramovich himself has a combined wealth of 11.65 billion euros.
Domestic rivals
Bayern and Chelsea see Madrid and Barcelona as their main rivals in Europe. Meanwhile Bayern beat their main German rival, Borussia Dortmund, in last year's Bundesliga - also eliminating them from the German Cup and the Champions League. According to a recent poll by Planetfootball.org, Chelsea supporters see Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester United as their main domestic rivals.
