Super Seven: Bayern Munich's greatest Champions League comebacks
Can Bayern Munich complete another comeback on the European stage? They are down 1-0 after the first leg of their Champions League semifinal against Atletico. Here's some of their greatest comebacks through the years.
Schwarzenbeck forces a replay
The first notable Bayern Munich comeback may have been the most significant. Facing Atletico in their first European Cup final, Georg Schwarzenbeck equalized in the last minute of extra time to force a replay in Brussels. Bayern went on to win the replay 4-0 with Gerd Müller and Uli Hoeness both scoring braces to give the Bayern their first of their three European Cups.
A revival to end the drought
Bayern ended a barren spell in Europe in 2001, but they needed a few equalizers to get there. Patrik Andersson handballed in the box and Valencia scored from the spot. After Mehmet Scholl missed in the first half, Steffen Effenberg (right) leveled from 12 yards. The match went all the way to penalties, where Bayern overcame an early Paulo Sergio miss to win the shootout.
Hair-raising rally against Real Madrid
Bayern's comeback in 2007 at the last 16 stage against Real Madrid was one of the most impressive. Madrid led 3-1 at halftime of the first leg, but an away goal from Mark van Bommel provided Bayern with a lifeline for the second leg. The Bavarians took advantage in Munich - Lucio (middle) scoring the winner as Bayern won 2-1 and advanced on away goals.
Avoiding embarrassment against Basel
Bayern Munich couldn't come up with a first-leg victory in Switzerland when the two clubs met in the last 16 in 2012. The Bundesliga side lost 1-0 to a late goal from current Hertha Berlin midfielder Valentin Stocker. Bayern redeemed themselves in the second leg, though, trouncing Basel 7-0 in Munich.
Matching Madrid in the Bernabeu
Bayern Munich were probably satisfied after their 2-1 first-leg result in the 2011/12 Champions League semifinal. Cristiano Ronaldo turned that satisfaction sour with two goals in the first 14 minutes of the second leg. However, Arjen Robben (right) equalized to keep the aggregate score level at 3-3. Misses from Ronaldo and Kaka in the shootout helped the Bavarians make the final.
Pounding Porto after defeat
Bayern Munich's biggest comeback after a first-leg deficit came in 2015. The Bavarians went down 3-1 in Porto, but they found their form quickly in the second leg. Bayern scored five goals in the first half - four of which came in the space of eight minutes. Bayern won the match 6-1, advancing to the semifinals after triumphing 7-4 on aggregate.
Jubilation against Juventus
Bayern Munich wouldn't be in the semifinals this season had they not completed their comeback against Juventus. After a 2-2 draw in Italy, Bayern fell behind 2-0 quickly in the return leg on home soil. Thomas Müller got the equalizing goal just before fulltime to force extra time, where substitute Thiago Alcantara netted the winning goal.
