Wawrinka wins US Open

Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka on Sunday defeated Serbia's top-ranked Novak Djokovic, clenching his first men's US Open title.

Wawrinka's victory denies Djokovic, a 12-time Grand Slam champion, of a second successive title at Flushing Meadows in New York.

The Swiss player won 6-7 (1), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3, making the US Open the 11th tournament final that he's contested.

The 31-year-old is the oldest player to claim the men's championship since Ken Rosewall won it in 1970 at the age of 35.

Wawrinka improved his standings to 3-0 in Grand Slam finals, effectively adding a new title to his 2014 Australian Open and 2015 Roland Garros victories.

While the Swiss player defeated the Serbian tennis star Djokovic, the game was not without its controversies.

Djokovic received a medical timeout in the middle of the fourth set after clutching his upper left leg and grimacing.

Wawrinka complained to the chair umpire that such timeouts should only be allowed during the changeover.

However, the 29-year-old Djokovic glanced over at the Swiss player and apologized for the delay, saying minor injuries to his feet were dampening his game.
