The world's best tall buildings
The 2014 "Best Tall Building Worldwide" awards have been announced by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Here are this year's winners and four other noteworthy buildings.
'One Central Park' tops list
Sydney's "One Central Park" was chosen the world's best tall building by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The building, which was built in 2013, measures 116 meters (380 feet). It is also energy efficient - sunlight reflector panels heat the homes.
Oregon's greenest building?
The "Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building," a government building in Portland, won the award in the Americas category. Standing at 110 meters (361 feet), it doesn't quite reach the heights of Mount Hood, Oregon's tallest mountain. It is one of the most energy efficient offices in the US, according to the US General Services Administration.
Eight buildings in one
Rotterdam is home to the "best tall building" in Europe. "De Rotterdam" may look like eight separate towers, but it is actually one building. It houses restaurants, apartments and hotels. The 151-meter (495 feet) De Rotterdam, which was completed in 2013, is now a major tourist attraction.
The Cayan Tower in Dubai
The winner in the "Middle East and Africa" category is the newest building in Dubai - the 306-meter (1003 feet) high "Cayan Tower." It's not a building in Dubai has won the award, but this year's winner comes with a twist. Each floor housing apartments is positioned 1.2 degrees clockwise from the floor below, allowing the building to turn 90 degrees.
Recognition for low emissions
The CTBUH "10-year award" went to the "Post Tower," which stands next to Deutsche Welle in Bonn. It houses the head office of Germany's postal service Deutsche Post DHL. The award celebrate the building's efforts over the past decade. Despite being built in 2002, it is one of the world's lowest energy-consuming buildings.
Ghana's tallest building
The "Villaggio II" in Accra, Ghana, was the finalist in the 2012 CTBUH awards for the Middle East and Africa category. Standing at 71 meters (233 feet), it is the tallest building in Ghana. Its architects took advantage of the country's tropical climate to produce energy - solar panels are used to heat the water.
The great tower
The "Gran Torre Santiago" in the Chilean capital was completed this year. It won prizes for "high-rise architecture" and "office architecture" at the International Property Awards. At 300 meters (984 feet), The Gran Torre is the tallest building in South America - it is only second to Australia's Q1 in the Southern Hemisphere.
Last year's winner
The CTBU "best tall building" in 2013 went to the China Central Television headquarters in Beijing. It was completed in 2011. Each part of the 237 meter (779 feet) high building has a different function. One column houses the broadcasting offices, and the other services. The two columns meet to form the television management at the top.
