Thousands flee southern Kyrgyzstan after the worst ethnic violence in 20 years

Ethnic clashes in southern Kyrgystan continued for a third day on Sunday, with some 100 people dead and more than a thousand wounded. The Red Cross has warned that the authorities and emergency services are overwhelmed in the south of the country. Uzbekistan says some 75 thousand refugees have entered its territory from Kyrgyzstan since the fighting engulfed the cites of Osh and Jalalabad. Russia has deployed paratroopers to protect its military base in the country. United Nations Secratary General Ban Ki Moon has voiced concern about the violence, saying he was alarmed by its scale and inter-ethnic nature.
