The Caucasus region on the southernmost edge of Russia, has often seen conflict with its northern neighbour. Moscow spent much of the 19th century fighting to incorporate the territory and was often met with fierce resistance. Under the domination of the Soviet Union much of the region suffered brutal oppression - and as the system fell apart in the early 90s nationalist movements began to challenge Moscow's rule again. Vladimir Putin began his first Russian presidency by sending tanks back into the breakaway republic of Chechnya.
