Berlin's new parliament district is located on the banks of the River Spree on the former divide between East and West. Similarly, Potsdamer Platz was a desolate no-man's land just 20 years ago, but is now home to rows of skyscrapers.
A cultural metropolis, Berlin is home to the famous Museum Island. The area was badly damaged in World War Two but has undergone extensive restoration in recent years.
The East Side Gallery, popular among tourists, is the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall. In 1990, it was decorated spontaneously by some 100 international artists and restored several times since then.
