Former prime minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko has been in jail since 2011, when she was arrested, trialed and sentenced by a Kyiv court which found she had overstepped her authority as head of government when she signed a gas deal with Russia in 2009.
The trial and verdict has been heavily criticized internationally and her detention was ruled unlawful by the European Court of Human Rights.
According to surveys, Tymoshenko is still Ukraine's most popular opposition leader.
The ongoing separation is strengthening the bond between Yulia Tymoshenko and her daughter Yevgenia, who has been campaigning for her mother’s release.
Yevgenia tells DW how she broke down in tears as she watched a dramatic new play about her mother’s plight.
