The world’s largest retailer Wal-Mart will continue to push ahead with its expansion plans in Germany despite difficult market conditions, the head of the firm’s German operations Kay Hafner said on Wednesday. The U.S. chain, which already has 92 stores in Germany, will open a Berlin superstore next spring and have signed a cooperation agreement with McDonald’s Germany. Hafner also said the opening of a second logistics center in Bingen near Mainz will help Wal-Mart’s German operations reduce costs. “Bingen puts us in the position to cut our costs further and get our products out more quickly and more tailored to the wishes of customers,” he said. He added the company would in the future focus on the needs of younger families.
