Wheelchair Cons Give Themselves Away

DW staff (jam)June 26, 2006

Three fans of the Argentine soccer team decided they'd do just about anything to see their team's game against Holland--even if it meant pretending to be disabled. But in the end, they blew their own cover.

The three men got hold of wheelchairs and pretended to be unable to walk. That, in turn, allowed them to buy special inexpensive World Cup tickets set aside for disabled soccer fans.

But as the game against powerhouse Holland got more exciting, one of the men couldn't contain his enthusiasm and at one point started jumping up and down on what turned out to be very healthy legs.

"Our friend couldn't stop jumping and a person near us thought there was a miracle happening," one of the trio, who only gave his name as Gustavo, told the Brazilian newspaper Folha de San Paulo.

But nothing at all miraculous was happening; a ruse was simply being discovered. Still, maybe the men learned a lesson as they were promptly ejected from the stadium. Or, maybe they didn't.

"We are embarrassed by what we did, but we had no alternative," said another member of the faux disabled. "We did not have the money to pay for a ticket."

Perhaps it's FIFA that should learn a lesson and consider what those high ticket prices force some to do.
